THE WORK OF A PREACHER

The work of a preacher is to guard the faith, teach the truth, and to take heed to his teaching and to himself (I Timothy 6: 20; I Timothy 4: 11; I Timothy 4: 16). He is to point out the responsibilities of Christians. The preacher is to teach and take part in the development of elders and deacons, and members (I Timothy 5: 3, 4; I Timothy 3: 1-7, 8-13, 15; 2 Timothy 2: 3). He is charged with preaching the Word to the brethren and putting them in mind of the truth (2 Timothy 4: 1-5; I Timothy 4: 6). He also has the responsibility to "exhort" (encourage) with his teaching and preaching.

Consider the sober charge that is in general given to every preacher of the word, especially those who work with the local church:

"I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry". 2 Timothy 4:1-5
